There is a captivating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which casino gaming is not legal. Eight casinos are established in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect location, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 1700, and though visas are allegedly necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of most borders.
The original Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga river boat is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are 150 one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive vacation and hotel complex that contains many amenities in addition to the gambling den, which provides ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machine games and 88 table games.
